Best European Companies To Own In Right Now

It has been almost a year since European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi brought temporary respite to Europe debt crisis by pledging to do hatever it takesto save the euro.

Since then, the situation in Europe has improved. Draghi efforts helped reduce the financial risks associated with a breakdown of the European banking system and a breakup of the euro. In addition, over the past year, European governments have made some progress in bringing their budgets in line and in achieving some modest structural reforms .

But while the region situation is better than it was a year ago, Europe is not out of the woods. Much of the job of restructuring European economies remains unfinished, fiscal deficit targets have slipped and there has been little progress on broader supranational issues such as banking integration or the pooling of sovereign debt. In short, the ECB actions were palliative and not a cure.

So what does this mean for global investors? Here are three reasons to pay attention to Europe now:

A deal conferring a set of BP's (NYSE: BP  ) American assets to Tesoro (NYSE: TSO  ) has been finalized. The latter is the owner of the petroleum giant's now-former refinery in Carson, near Los Angeles, and a network of more than 800 retail stations. It also gains control of the related logistical and marketing assets in the region. All told, the value of the deal is roughly $2.4 billion.

But with all the majors who've signed up for Canadian LNG -- Chevron (CVX), Apache (APA), Shell (RDS.A), BP (BP), and most recently Malaysian major Petronas (PNADF.OB) announcing it will invest $20 billion to develop its Pacific Northwest LNG project near Prince Rupert -- we're talking about a development almost unprecedented in our petroleum sector.

It really is the same thing as when LINN goes out and makes another deal. As a growth by acquisition company, LINN has no choice but to tap the capital markets to get deals done. That's why you saw the $4.3 billion purchase of Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY  ) in conjunction with its affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) earlier this year as a stock-for-stock deal. Even when LINN makes a cash deal, like its two deals with BP (NYSE: BP  ) last year, its getting that cash from investors not from cash flow. For example, when LINNannouncedthe $1.2 billion purchase of BP's Hugoton assets, it announceda debt offering to pay for it. Because of LINN's business model, the company will continually need to tap the capital markets to grow.

Could this be the real deal this time? There's no denying that InvenSense has pretty solid technology, particularly as Samsung -- which typically uses the best components it can find -- has so extensively used InvenSense's products. That said, the iPhone 5s used the following MEMS components:

Three-axis accelerometer from Bosch Sensortech Three-axis gyroscope from STMicroelectronics (STM) Three-axis electronic compass from AKM

For InvenSense to displace Bosch (which managed to wrestle away the accelerometer socket from STMicroelectronics) and/or STMicroelectronics over at Apple, it is going to have to present a pretty compelling value proposition. Whether it can do so only the tear-downs will tell, but it is surprising -- particularly given how compelling InvenSense's products seem to be -- that the company hasn't won an iPhone socket to date.

Top 10 Defense Companies To Buy Right Now

If you ask devoted Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) shareholders why they own it, they'll tell you there are about 787 good reasons to buy Boeing stock today -- and maybe more. Yesterday, Boeing announced that it's landed 102 orders for its most advanced Dreamliner airplane yet, the 787-10, with United Airlines (NYSE: UAL  ) signing up to buy 20 of the new birds, and Air Lease (NYSE: AL  ) and Singapore Airlines tying in the race to buy the most -- 30 Dreamliner-10s apiece.

And yes, the plane is incredibly popular. Boeing has already booked in excess of 840 orders for Dreamliners of various shapes and sizes. At the company's planned year-end, 10-planes-per-month production rate, that works out to a backlog of orders stretching seven years long. But did you know that the 787 Dreamliner isn't the only Boeing product that's doing well?

The best offense is a great defense business
Over on the other end of its business model, Boeing stock has a secret weapon that's getting far less attention than the vaunted Dreamliner -- and far less attention that it deserves.

The Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) finished the week on a losing note, falling 140 points on Friday and ending with a weekly loss of about a third of a percent. Along with the onslaught of earnings results announced today, many market commentators blamed the increasing chance of armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia as justifying the market's drop. But if that were the case, you'd expect to see defense stocks rise -- yet neither United Technologies (NYSE: UTX  ) nor Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) managed to gain ground on the day despite their defense-industry ties, and purer-play defense stocks also posted losses today. Why weren't defense stocks the right play for fears of war?

Top 10 Defense Companies To Buy Right Now: Implant Sciences Corp (IMSC)

Implant Sciences Corporation (Implant Sciences), incorporated in August 31,1984, develops, manufactures and sells sensors and systems for the security, safety and defense (SS&D) industries. Its technologies are used worldwide in security and inspection applications. Implant Sciences has developed technologies used in explosives trace detection (ETD), and and narcotics trace detection (NTD) applications and market and sell handheld ETD and benchtop ETD and NTD systems that use its technologies. The systems are used by private companies and Government agencies to screen baggage, cargo, vehicles, other objects and people for the detection of trace amounts of explosives. Implant Sciences have developed explosives detection systems designed for use in aviation and transportation security, high threat facilities and infrastructure, military installations, customs and border protection, and mail and cargo screening. The systems use the Quantum Sniffer technologies, including photon-based, non-radioactive ion source in combination with ion mobility spectrometry, a detection tool sensitive to the speeds with which ions of various substances move through the air to electronically detect minute quantities of explosives vapor and particles.

Quantum Sniffer QS-H150 Portable Explosives Detector

The Quantum Sniffer QS-H150 Portable Explosives Detector employs a vortex collector for the simultaneous detection of explosives particulates and vapors with or without physical contact and in real-time. The QS-HS150 can detect vapors and nanogram quantities of explosives particulates for explosives substances considered to be threats. The substances include military and commercial explosives, improvised and homemade explosives, and propellants and taggants.

The QS-H150 has automatic and continuous self-calibration. It monitors its environment, senses changes that would affect its accuracy, and re-calibrates accordingly. The system requires no user intervention and no calibration cons! umables. The detection process begins with the collection of a sample with its vortex collector. After collection, the sample is ionized photonically and analyzed using ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) technology. The presence of a threat substance is indicated by a visible and audible alarms. The threat substance is then identified and displayed on the integrated liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. When detecting a threat substance, the QS-H150 rapidly alarms. This real-time detection limits equipment contamination and allows for fast clear-down.

Quantum Sniffer QS-B220 Benchtop Explosives and Narcotics Detector

QS-B220 Benchtop Explosives and Narcotics Detector uses dual IMS with non-radioactive ionization for the detection and identification of a range of military, commercial, and improvised explosives as well as narcotics. The QS-B220 uses a sample trap which is wiped on the surface to be interrogated for explosives or narcotics particles.

The QS-B220 has automatic and continuous self-calibration. It monitors its environment, senses changes that would affect its accuracy, and re-calibrates accordingly.

Quantum Sniffer TM QS-Hx Portable Explosives Detector

The Company is focusing in developing a next-generation handheld detector that will use dual IMS non-radioactive ionization for the detection and identification of a range of military, commercial and improvised explosives, as well as narcotics. The QS-Hx will have automatic and continuous self-calibration, multi-level password-protected data security and will include a data management interface with data export to a network for recordkeeping, providing a link with the central command centers and logistics systems used by carriers.

Miniature Mass Spectrometer

The Company acquisition of Ion Metrics enabled it to obtain miniaturized quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) detector technology. The QMS detector is roughly the size of an AA battery and has low manufactur! ing costs! . When used in conjunction with an IMS, the QMS detector senses the molecular weight of the chemical species resulting in an orthogonal detection method in which a more fundamental characteristic of a substance is measured. It is developing interfaces for integrating the QMS detector into its future products.

Hyphenated Detectors

Depending on the application and the number of interfering background chemicals, it may be necessary to incorporate additional orthogonal detection methods. The combination of multiple sensors in series is known as employing hyphenated methods. By measuring different properties of the same species, interferents are separated from target species for a deterministic detection and identification and have minimum rates of false alarms. It is developing hyphenated systems employing conventional ion mobility, differential mobility and quadrupole mass spectrometry. As of June 30, 2012, it has one patent issued in real-time trace detection by IMS and QMS and two hyphenated system patents pending.

The Company competes with Morpho Detection, Inc., NucTech Company Limited and Smiths Detection, Inc.

Advisors' Opinion:

It's not an uncompetitive market. Names like Implant Sciences Corporation (OTCMKTS:IMSC) and NXT-ID (OTCBB:NXTD) are battling in the security and facility-defense arena as well; IMSC makes explosives-detection and drug-detection hardware, while NXTD designs 3D image-rendering software that caters to the unique needs of prison security personnel, though the same technology has been proven in more traditional functions like building-security systems that keep certain people out rather than in. Neither Implant Sciences nor NXT-ID compete directly head-to-head with View Systems, however ... fortunately for them. See, VSYM is considered by some to be the best in the industry.

    52-Week Range: $1.42-$3.74

    Tuesday's Volume: 106,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 74,659

From a technical perspective, RWC trended higher here right above some near-term support levels at $3.20 to $3.10 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending for the last two months, with shares moving higher from its low of $2.62 to its intraday high of $3.58. During that move, shares of RWC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move is quickly pushing shares of RWC within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if RWC manages to take out its 52-week high at $3.74 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RWC as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $3.20 or its 50-day at $3.10 and then once it sustains a move or close above $3.74 with volume that hits near or above 74,659 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then RWC will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4.50 to $5.

Hexcel manufactures and markets a range of Redux film and paste adhesives. These structural adhesives, which bond metal to metal and composites and honeycomb structures, are used in the aerospace industry and for many industrial applications.

HexWeb honeycomb is a cellular structure consisting of nested hexagonal cells. The product is similar in appearance to a cross-sectional slice of a beehive. It can also be manufactured in asymmetric cell configurations for more specialized applications. Honeycomb is primarily used as a lightweight core material and acts as an energy absorber. When sandwiched between composite or metallic facing skins, honeycomb increases the stiffness of the structure, while adding very little weight. The Company produces honeycomb from a number of metallic and non-metallic materials. Its metallic honeycomb is made from aluminum and is available in a selection of alloys, cell sizes and dimensions. Non-metallic materials used in the manufacture of honeycomb include fiberglass, carbon fiber, thermoplastics, non-flammable aramid papers, aramid fiber and other specialty materials. 5 Best High Tech Stocks To Own Right Now

Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS  ) seems in many ways the anti-InvenSense (NYSE: INVN  ) . While it seems that the sell-side perpetually raises expectations for the latter, claiming that this time InvenSense will win meaningful content share inside of next generation Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) products, longtime Apple supplier Cirrus Logic -- which has a fair amount of content across Apple's devices -- seems to be the subject of analyst reports claiming that it has lost content over at Apple.

What's the latest on Apple and Cirrus?
As a brief reminder, Cirrus Logic is well known for providing audio CODECs as well as audio amplifiers to Apple for its iPhone and iPad products. That said, things have started to seem a bit wobbly as Cirrus lost an audio amplifier socket inside of last year's iPad Air.

To compound matters, a research note from Rosenblatt Securities claims that Cirrus may have lost 50% to 100% of the power amplifier content within Apple's upcoming iPhone 6. The firm believes that this content is worth about $0.80 per unit, which is material over what could be well north of 100 million iPhone 6 models sold over the next year. (Cirrus' revenue this year looks to be about $700 million per consensus, so this would not be a trivial loss.)

The Japanese synthetic-fiber maker offered $16.75 a share, a 9.5% discount to Thurday’s close. Zoltek has struggled amid what it has called a cyclical downturn in the wind energy market. Zoltek shares dropped 10% to $16.58 in light premarket trading.

    3. Zoltek (NASDAQ: ZOLT  )
Zoltek was an interesting investment at the beginning of the year for futurist investors. The company is one of the largest manufacturers of carbon fiber in the world. In fact, its lightweight and high-strength carbon fiber is used almost exclusively in the largest wind turbine blades around the world and played a major role in America's 20-fold improvement in breezy energy capacity since 2000. This material of the future has many other uses and potential uses as well, but Zoltek has never really gained the confidence of the market in any big way: Its market cap was hovering near $300 million at the start of the year.

Top 10 Healthcare Technology Companies To Own For 2014

Just a few weeks after Paulson & Co. sold off more than half of its holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust ETF (GLD) in the second quarter, investors are moving back into the precious metal.

GLD is trading up about 0.5% on Friday and should end the week up about 2% vs. a 2% decline for the S&P 500. At the same time, volatility in the markets is down about 1% today, but should end the week up 6%.

As gold futures rose about 2% on Thursday, JPMorgan analysts said in a report, “This may be delivering an exclamation mark to define the end of the 10-month, 25% fall in gold and 50% fall in gold equities.”

In general, the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing program has a negative impact on the dollar, is viewed as inflationary and hence improves the outlook for gold, long seen as an inflation hedge.

For the past month, the SPDR Gold ETF has improved 5%. During the last four weeks, volatility has ticked up 2%, while the S&P 500 has been flat.

In ETFs, this translates to substantially bearish moves in PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (UUP) and highly bullish moves in theCurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (FXY). The BoJ left policy unchanged, with no stated plans to alter the 60 trillion Yen ($611 billion) in annual injections to the country's monetary base. Most analysts were expecting the BoJ would approve loan operations that extend to two years (or longer), and the results put renewed focus on the 10-year Japanese treasury note. Since the BoJ announced its historic stimulus plan in April, the 10-year note has risen from its all-time lows at 0.315% to highs of 1%. The main ideological thrust of the BoJ must be kept in perspective, however, as there is still clear long-term concern for the prospects of the country's export companies and pronounced efforts in place to bring consumer inflation levels back toward normal ranges.

ConAgra (NYSE: CAG  ) will release its quarterly report on Thursday, and investors have increasingly doubted whether the food giant can hold its own in an increasingly competitive environment in the industry. With Nestle (NASDAQOTH: NSRGY  ) and Kraft Foods (NASDAQ: KRFT  ) both having held up much better since August than ConAgra has, skeptics are pointing at ConAgra's lack of earnings growth as a reason to doubt its capacity for future success.

The European Central Bank could make an important decision soon. Pricing data in the European Union has been coming in weak, hitting the lowest level in more than four years. This adds pressure to ECB President Mario Draghi, who might start looking for ways to counter the deflationary threat in the region. What can he do? Two things: cut interest rates and/or start a round of quantitative easing to boost activity levels and push prices up. During last week's monthly meeting, the ECB left its policies unchanged, but calls for action are mounting, and Draghi says measures including asset purchases are on the table.

With the U.S. Federal Reserve winding down its quantitative-easing program and the Japanese central bank finishing its strong QE of 2013, it might be Europe's turn to try a more aggressive policy to drive its economy. After all, the austerity measures designed to curtail the unsustainable deficit spending kept demand soft in the region and did not solve its problems.

How could this impact European assets?
Normally, a drop in interest rates and expansive monetary policies are positive for capital markets. In Japan, for example, the Nikkei grew more than 60% last year, while the U.S.' S&P 500 gained 28%.

For a closer look at how Europe is doing, consider the best-known broad European index ETF, Vanguard European Stock Index (NYSEMKT: VGK  ) . This fund invests in large- and mid-cap stocks based in 17 developed European markets, representing most of the investable market. Many of the fund's largest holdings are quality multinational names such as Nestle (NASDAQOTH: NSRGY  ) , Royal Dutch Shell, Roche, and HSBC (NYSE: HSBC  ) . But if you consider weight by country, the U.K. comes first with 33%, followed by Switzerland with 14% and France with 14%.

How much impact there will be on the profit margin will depend on the royalty rate set. Virnetx has an established royalty rate structure both published and through agreements with other licensees. Virnetx's published royalty rate is between 1 and 2 percent for customers in good standing. This royalty rate has been validated through licenses with 4 different companies, Siemens (SI), NEC, Mitel (MITL), and Aastra (AATSF.PK). The average rate agreed to by these companies through negotiations is 1.52%, right in the middle of the 1 to 2 percent published rate. Whatever rate is set will further reduce Apple's profit margin.

More than a handful of energy companieshad strong performances over the past year. Valero Energy (NYSE: VLO  ) soared 94%, for example, as refiners have been doing well recently. The company is poised to benefit from the proposed (and controversial) Keystone XL Pipeline, and has been investing in railcars to boost profits from the Bakken shale fields. It also spun off the promising CST Brandsconvenience-store business. A concern, though, is proposed legislation to reduce corn ethanol production, as Valero is a major producer of it.
