Consider: Shares of Gilead Sciences have risen just 3% so far in 2014, lagging Amgen’s (AMGN) 10% rise and Bioegen Idec’s (BIIB) 26% advance. The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) has risen 24% so far this year.

Rising biotech stars Celgene (NASDAQ: CELG  ) , Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB  ) , and Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ: GILD  ) have all crushed the market in the last year. Heck, even Amgen has been rewarded by the market for making biologics and biosimilars a top priority. Shares of each company have shot upwards on earnings acceleration expectations thanks to promising late stage pipelines. Multiple potential megablockbusters in the wings could bring in billions in sales by the end of the decade if approved and launched successfully.

Teva has dropped 7.7% to $37.85 today at 3:23 p.m. but doesn’t seem to be spreading though the generic drug space. Taro Pharmaceuticals (TARO) ha gained 1.1% to $79, while Actavis (ACT) has gained 1.2% to $156.25 and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (RDY) has advanced 1% to $40.24. Mylan (MYL) has dropped 0.7% to $38.40.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

The company's generic drug segment should also help push emerging market sales. Abbott markets generic pharmaceuticals outside the U.S. only, and while the division isn't growth-oriented -- sales actually fell around 2% for the quarter -- it provides an entry for the company to push into lucrative new markets such as India, where generics make up the large majority of the country's retail market. The company will face tougher competition in this industry, however: Firms such as India-based Dr. Reddy's (NYSE: RDY  ) have also pushed hard into emerging markets lately, and Dr. Reddy's in particular should benefit from its being headquartered in one of the industry's top locales.

  • [By Benjamin Shepherd] We’re now into day 15 of the US government shutdown, as House Republicans stubbornly try to defund Obamacare. No matter what sort of deal is eventually struck, health care costs aren’t likely to come down any time soon. And that’s good news for generic drug makers.

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (NYSE: RDY) is one of the biggest players in generic drugs, offering more than 200 off-brand medications in the areas of cardiovascular disease, pain management and oncology, among others. In fact, this India-based company has become one of the largest makers of generics in the world, helping to drive more than 20 percent annual compounded earnings growth at the company over the past decade.

Hot Prefered Companies To Buy For 2015

This quarter's bank earnings will be critical says MoneyShow's Jim Jubak and he explains how the earnings' profile for banks has changed.

For the week ahead, watch out for, no, not the debt ceiling, not the budget crisis in Washington, but bank earnings. We start to get bank earnings on Friday the 11th. We'll get JP Morgan. We'll get Wells Fargo. We'll get Bank of America. We'll get Citibank. This one is going to be a really critical quarter for banks, even without the background of all the macro stuff coming out of Washington, and it's going to be even more important going forward.

The real issue was, that it looked like banks were kind of running out of steam, in the way that they were showing better returns, that a lot of the earnings growth that we're seeing from banks has not been because the business has been getting better, but because banks have been taking reserves that they've put aside for bad debt and moving them back to earnings. When you reserve money for the potential that a credit card debt is going to go bad, it doesn't go into earnings, it goes into reserves, and then when you reverse the process and say, "Oh, credit cards aren't going as quickly as we thought," you put it back into earnings.

Top 10 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch Right Now

My brother is one of the lucky individuals beta-testing the new Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) product Google Glass. I think they look a little ridiculous (even if they are wicked cool to play with), but I have not been too concerned with prime light-hogging wearable computing. Instead, I have been watching the tech giant quietly increase its investment in renewable energy. I would even argue that some of the technologies coming out of Google X have larger potential than Glass for shareholders and consumers alike.

Google X takes to the skies ... literally
Big G has invested more than $1 billion in wind and solar projects globally since rolling out its ambitious clean energy agenda. The projects will generate over 2 gigawatts of electricity, or enough to power 500,000 homes. Notable investments include a $280 million check cut to SolarCityto assist in financing residential solar projects, and a 37.5% equity stake in the development of a 7,000 MW offshore wind farm in the Atlantic Ocean.

Alamy You can never know in advance all the news that will move the market in a given week, but some things you can see coming. From the world's largest consumer tech company posting its iEarnings to a pivotal end to the trading month, here are some of the things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Growing Apples: Lately, Apple (AAPL) hasn't been the growth stock darling that it was through most of the past decade, but it seems to be turning the corner. Apple is expected to post growth in revenue and earnings when it reports fiscal first quarter results on Monday afternoon. It's not likely to be much. Analysts see revenue and earnings per share climbing by no more than 5 percent over last year's holiday quarter. That may seem low given the success of the iPhone 5S and iPad Air that hit the market late last year. However, it's been hard to overcome the slide in Mac and iPod sales. Tuesday -- Comcast Stems the Bleeding: Another company showing renewed signs of life is Comcast (CMCSK). The country's largest cable provider hasn't had a problem growing its Internet and broadband phone services, but it's been struggling since 2007 to keep its pay TV customers around. Comcast finally surprised investors earlier this month by announcing that it closed out the fourth quarter with more subscribers than it had three months earlier. This is the first time that Comcast has posted a sequential increase in video customers after 26 quarters of declines. Comcast reports on Tuesday. Hopefully it will shed some light on this welcome development, letting us know if the cord cutter fears are in the past. Wednesday -- Are We Friends Again: It will be Facebook (FB) hoping that the market clicks "Like" on the leading social networking website's quarterly financials on Wednesday. Facebook had a rocky start as a public company two years ago, going public at $38 and falling into the teens several months later. However, explosive top- and bottom-l

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Holly LaFon]

Much like the first three months of the year, the second quarter served up a mixture of good and bad economic news. On April 3, the Institute of Supply Management (ISM) announced its nonmanufacturing index fell to 54.4, a seven month low. Higher taxes and federal budget cuts were purported to blame for the slowdown. Two days later on the first Friday of the month, the Labor Department released disappointing March employment numbers: Employers added only 88,000 new jobs, fewer than any month in the past year (though the number was later revised up to 142,000). The unemployment rate dropped to 7.6%, but only because an estimated almost half million people left the workforce in March. On a more encouraging note, housing starts in March rose 7.0% to an annual rate of 1,036,000 (later revised to 1,005,000) and new home sales climbed 1.5% (revised to 1.3%) to 417,000 annualized (revised to 451,000), the second highest jump in three years. Despite the mixed signals, the U.S. equity market, as measured by the S&P 500 Index, rose a modest 1.9% in April.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

When biotech-savvy investors think of immunology stocks, they tend to gravitate towards a name like Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ:DNDN), which for all intents and purposes introduced the world's first cancer vaccine, Provenge, as a treatment for prostate cancer. Traders with a better-than-average knowledge of the immunology field may turn their attention to a company like CEL-SCI Corporation (NYSEMKT:CVM). CEL-SCI doesn't have a product on the market yet, but its head and neck cancer drug - which also uses immunology - is in Phase 3 testing right now, and looks very promising. There are other, and smaller, stocks within the world of immunology, however, that deserve a closer look from the market, and one of the most exciting ones further down the size scale is TNI Biotech Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNIB).

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Look out AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV), and Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD), you may want to look over your shoulder as well. There's a new immunology player coming to town, and its name is CEL-SCI Corporation (NYSEMKT:CVM). Yes, AbbVie may be the name behind blockbuster drug Humira - with nearly $10 billion in sales in 2012 - while Gilead Sciences is saving HIV patients' lives with immunological therapies Stribild and Complera. But, small cap company CEL-SCI may be closer to launching its own immunology drug sooner than most investors realize.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

Louis Vuitton (LVMH) is one of the world's leading manufacturers and retailers of luxury apparel. Nearly two years ago, we began to analyze the company. We liked the business model, particularly the growth potential as consumers in emerging markets grow more eager to demonstrate their af铿ence. We concluded that the company was well-run by a trustworthy management team, but its valuation did not seem very compelling. Louis Vuitton did not appear to be trading at what we felt was enough of a discount to its intrinsic value. Despite this, we did not abandon the idea. For the next 18 months we kept Louis Vuitton on what we call our inventory list. It was an investment we were comfortable making if the right price presented itself. In April, Louis Vuitton shares declined sharply after shareholders were disappointed by their latest earnings announcement, bringing the stock down to a valuation that we felt was attractive. We acted quickly to purchase shares.

Hot Airline Companies For 2015

"Hey! Who's Flying This Thing?" you may ask. Well, assuming you're talking about unmanned aerial vehicles, chances are that at least initially, the answer to that question is going to be L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL  ) .

Since the advent of the General Atomics Predator drone set off the race to fill the sky with UAVs, the U.S. military's preferred contractor for training its troops to fly the robotic airlines has been L-3. And this remains true today. On Monday, L-3 announced that its L-3 Link Simulation and Training subsidiary has just won a "recomplete" for the right to keep on building training systems to fly the UAVs, and to keep assisting in that training as well.

L-3 originally won the contract to build seven Predator Mission Aircrew Training Systems (PMATS) for the U.S. Air Force back in June 2005. PMATS links an actual drone ground control station to L-3 computers running flight simulation software, allowing users to train on the same equipment they will be using once training has been completed. L-3 has won additional work on this system since, including an upgrade of the PMATS software in 2008, and contracts to build new equipment. At present, the Air Force has 26 of the company's PMATS systems in operation.

Advisors' Opinion:

Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK  ) may be the best airline available to investors. It's been incredibly successful in its slow, steady expansion plan that not only increases routes but increases revenue per seat along the way. It's no secret either, as the stock has gone up north of 80% in the last 12 months. Yet, even with its tremendous run-up in stock price, the company still trades under 10 times forward earnings. Let's take a look at the first quarter and see if it's time to back up the truck for Alaska Air.

  • [By Asit Sharma]

The airline industry has a singular talent for draining the pockets of well-intentioned investors. Highly leveraged balance sheets and bankruptcies are the norm. Significant labor costs and unpredictable jet fuel prices wreak havoc on variable costs. Yet some airlines generate solid returns quarter after quarter. Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK  ) , Ryanair (NASDAQ: RYAAY  ) , Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) , and Copa Holdings (NYSE: CPA  ) each manage to be consistently profitable. Let's examine a few themes they share in common, and zero in on their individual strategic ideas.

Hero Images Inc./Alamy Using a credit card to earn frequent flier miles is a popular way to get free travel. For example, I am flying to California this Thanksgiving. I was able to book my $650 roundtrip with 25,000 miles and a fee of $11.20. That means my miles were worth 2.6 cents each. Or, to put it a different way, I earned a 2.6 percent return on my credit card spending. However, which frequent flier strategy will be best for you is not always obvious. To make the smartest decision, you should ask yourself: On which airline should I earn my miles? For my chosen airline, which credit card should I use? Airline Choice If you are a frequent flier, then the answers may be obvious. For example, if you fly 30,000 miles a year on Delta (DAL) for work, then topping up your air miles with credit card miles makes a lot of sense. But if you don't travel a lot for business, then you should let the numbers guide your airline choice. And you really shouldn't think about a lifetime loyalty strategy. Instead, you should think about your immediate travel goal. A free trip to Hawaii? Or Europe? Or do you just want to fly home for Thanksgiving, like I did? Your answer impacts the airline that you should chose. When redeeming miles for a free trip, airlines offer multiple redemption tiers. For example, if you want a free trip in the continental United States, American Airlines (AAL) offers MileSAAver awards (25,000 miles for a round-trip ticket), but they are only available some of the time. AAnytime Awards cost 40,000 miles. That is a huge difference. A MileCard.com study showed big differences among airlines on how many miles are required, on average, to redeem for a free ticket. For example, if you want to fly to Hawaii, the average number of miles required was 65,463 at Delta vs. 82,246 at American. Here is a summary of the best airlines, and the miles required, by region. Remember, these are averages based upon historic data, and your mileage requirement may diff

J.M. Smucker is increasing the price of Folgers and Dunkin' Donuts packaged coffee by 9%, but prices at Dunkin' Donuts restaurants will be unaffected. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Feeling the bite of a drought in South America, J.M. Smucker said it's going to raise the price on its coffee products by 9%.

The price hike will affect Folgers and Dunkin' Donuts packaged products sold in grocery stores.

Ohio-based J.M.Smucker (SJM) said that K-Cup packs are exempt from the increase.

The impact on consumers was inevitable. Coffee prices have surged this year, exasperated by a severe drought in Brazil that wreaked havoc on this year's harvest of Arabica beans, the most popular bean in coffee production.

"What Smucker is facing is that they've burned through their low priced coffee, and now they have to replace it with higher priced coffee," said Dan Cox, president of Coffee Enterprises, a company in Burlington, Vt., that analyzes the quality of coffee.
