Hot Integrated Utility Stocks To Watch Right Now

What would be the best portfolio in today’s market if 24/7 news cycles and portfolio statements did not imperil your reputation through short-term dips?

That “Desert Island Portfolio,” as John West of Research Affiliates calls it, would consist of today’s “most feared and loathed” areas of the market: emerging stocks and bonds.

Emerging-market stocks and bonds are poised to significantly outperform U.S. stocks and bonds over the coming years — based on current valuation criteria — but most investors will lack the nerve to buy them, or if they do buy them, to hold them.

So argues an analysis by West, a managing director of Rob Arnott’s Research Affilliates, based on the idea that advisors and managers of capital are constrained from optimizing returns by the fact that all professionals  must report to someone.

West cites a variety of evidence that continuous performance measurement pressures investment professionals to manage short-term returns to avoid the risk of falling short of benchmarks and peer groups. After all, the client, after firing you, won’t get the benefit of the long-term investment gains, anyway.

It a good day for auto dealer stocks. CarMax (CMX) got engines revving on Wall Street when it posted blowout quarterly results. And Goldman Sachs upgraded AutoNation (AN) from Neutral to Buy and set a six-month price target of $65, citing the company growth prospects, margins and balance sheet.

The AutoNation upgrade was actually part of a broader industry call by analysts Patrick Archambault and David Tamberrino. In a 32-page note published today, the pair raised estimates for auto dealers, citing increased SAAR projections for 2014 through 2016 and growth opportunity from M&A. Archambault and Tamberrino write:

The combination of these factors drives up our 2015/2016 EPS estimates to 2.4% and 6.1% above the Street which we believe is understating the sector growth potential. M&A is the key growth opportunity. About 2 points of our 3% profit revision comes from M&A. With $2.4bn of dry powder, a still very fragmented dealer group, and reasonable valuations on the private side we think the risk is to the upside for acquisitions. M&A has added 2.4% to dealer revenue growth annually over the past 5 years which we assume continues.

AutoNation rose 2.7% to $58.04, while CarMax surged 15.6% to $52.32

David Tulis/AP It's beginning to look a lot like ... the day after Christmas? On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers' attention to the day after the holiday. Amazon.com (AMZN) already is offering "after Christmas" deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy (GPS) is running TV ads that its "after-holiday sale starts early" with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS (CVS) was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve. Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas. "I'll probably start shopping for me at that point," she said. Stores usually wait until after Christmas to offer discounts of up to 70 percent or more on holiday merchandise that didn't sell. But Americans who are still worried about the economy have held tightly to their purse strings this year, and store sales have fallen for the past three consecutive weeks. The pre-Christmas deals come as retailers are feeling pressure to attract Americans into stores during the final week of what's typically the busiest shopping period of the year. The two-month stretch that begins on Nov. 1 is important because retailers can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales during that time. Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively. Stores had a problem even getting Americans into stores, let alone getting them to spend. The number of shoppers fell 21.2 percent during the week that ended on Sunday, according to ShopperTrak. Karen McDonald, a spokeswoman at Taubman Centers, which owns or operates 28 malls, estima

    Making the Comparison
Gross domestic product figures can be released on a monthly or quarterly basis. For the United States, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), a branch of the US Commerce Department, releases final quarterly domestic figures—along with additional advanced or preliminary figures toward the end of each month. This report can also be released in either real or nominal conditions, the former being adjusted for the effects of inflation. The BEA also releases its GDP price index that has been used in competition with both consumer price index (CPI) and the personal consumption expenditures deflator as a gauge of consumer inflation.
