BOSTON -- Cybersecurity company FireEye has acquired Mandiant, the computer forensics specialist best known for unveiling a secretive Chinese military unit believed to be behind a series of hacking attacks on U.S. companies. FirEye (FEYE) shares jumped more than 20 percent after Thursday's announcement of the $1.05 billion cash-and-stock deal, which FireEye said closed Monday. It unites two companies with relatively new technologies for thwarting cyber attacks, and brings together two of the most-respected executives in the security industry: FireEye CEO Dave DeWalt and Mandiant founder Kevin Mandia. While sales of older anti-virus products have been on the decline, security experts expect strong growth in both FireEye's cloud-based systems for detecting malicious software and Mandiant's software that analyzes cyber attacks. About a year ago the two companies entered into a technology development agreement that made it easier to deploy their products together. With the merger, FireEye will gain Mandiant's team of forensics investigators. "They have these very strong Navy 'cyber' Seals who respond to breaches and are very good at what they do," DeWalt said about Mandiant. He had previously served as chairman of Mandiant's board. "My aim is to create the strongest security company in the world," DeWalt said in an interview. FireEye, which has yet to post a profit, said the acquisition will be immediately accretive to earnings and expects the combined company's revenue to grow about 50 percent this year. In comparison, Symantec (SYMC), the biggest maker of anti-virus software, has said it expects fiscal 2014 revenue to drop 3 percent to 4 percent. Mandiant is best known for its forensics services. The company rose to prominence in February 2013 when it pu

Alamy Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is heading for the exit. Should Microsoft (MSFT) shareholders follow suit? Shares of the software giant soared 7 percent on Friday on news that it would be replacing Ballmer as CEO within the next 12 months. The market's opinion of the news must sting Ballmer (though it also made him a few hundred million dollars richer), but investors expecting that Microsoft's next leader will be able to return the company to its former glory may be in for a rude awakening. Why would consumers and businesses want to return to a time when they were dependent on a stodgy operating system that was expensive and slow to adapt? What if Microsoft doesn't find the right CEO? What if there is no such thing as the CEO? Those are just a few of the heavy questions that Microsoft's stockholders face in light of Ballmer's pending departure, and they may not like the answers. You Can't Go Home Again First, let's talk fundamentals. Does Microsoft's business make it a good buy for forward-thinking investors? Well, in the past dozen years, Microsoft has gone from being the world's most valuable company to one that is worth less than two-thirds of what current leader Apple (AAPL) is today. Microsoft and Google (GOOG) commanded nearly identical $290 billion market caps at the kick off of this trading week, and the search engine giant wasn't even publicly traded when Ballmer was tapped to be Microsoft's CEO in 2000. In fact, Google had only been founded 16 months earlier. Tech babies grow so fast these days. And that, at least in part, is the root of Microsoft's problems. Computing hasn't merely evolved -- it has metamorphosed. Consumers aren't buying PCs like they used to. Desktop and laptop sales have fallen sharply for five consecutive quarters, which has never happened before. That's not a lull. That's not a bad stretch. That's a trend. And it isn't just a Windows woe. Apple's Mac sales have also been sliding in recent quarters. Most PC buyers never

How many times have you heard (or said) that computer programming seems like a pretty great job? Many of the best companies to work for are major employers of software engineers. The Fool's own list of the 25 best companies in America has three: Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) , Akamai (NASDAQ: AKAM ) , and IBM. Google and Akamai also place highly on Glassdoor's latest Best Places to Work list, which is topped by Facebook (NASDAQ: FB ) , one of the few companies to inspire an award-winning film about (among other things) coding software.

As Reuters recently reported, Lenovo, which does not have any meaningful presence elsewhere in the world, is the second largest smartphonecompany in China, with a market share of 9.8% compared to Samsung’s 18.5%. That would seem to lock out Apple, but the history of smartphones in the United States shows that may not be necessarily so. Apple may be the market share leader in smartphones in Americatoday. However, Samsung is gaining on it quickly. Just two years ago, Samsung’s success was unimaginable. Odds were that Motorola, now a part of Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) would die by the end of the decade. Its association with Google may allow it to turn around. On the other hand, HTC, which appeared on the march to do as well as Samsung, has fallen apart, plagued by phones that are poorly designed and have glitches.

With 112 million active users and more than 350 million listings globally, eBay certainly qualifies as a world-leading e-commerce company. eBay's advantage isn't measured in dollars but in people, and it's that trust and loyalty that gives eBay a huge moat. The same could be said of Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN ) , but the mechanisms behind each company's success differ in subtle but critically important ways. The art of negotiation can still be found on eBay (where it hasn't been replaced with Buy It Now), but Amazon prefers to focus on simple cost comparisons -- what you see as the lowest price on Amazon is what you're going to get. Amazon also lacks the built-in payment mechanism eBay bought years ago and has slowly built into a world-class online payments processor.

Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX ) bears often point to the company's more than $5 billion in streaming content liabilities as a "ticking time bomb" that will eventually pose a severe threat to the company's health. Competitors such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN ) are entering the streaming video market, and the resulting bidding wars have driven up the price of content.

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN ) have also both gotten into the online payment melee, with Google Wallet and Amazon Payments. Both methods are widely accepted by merchants across the Internet, but still lag behind PayPal and credit/debit card payments. But the issue for consumers remains that each system still requires access to a bank account or credit card, plus the wallets or payment systems are not accepted everywhere. That leads to multiple accounts, which spreads out their money. Hence the attraction of a digital currency.
