Hot Medical Stocks To Own Right Now

Questcor (QCOR) is a biotechnology company focused on providing prescription drugs for central nervous system disorders. It offers ''Acthar'', the sole revenue driving drug, which treats patients with multiple sclerosis and infantile spasms. Acthar, in the first quarter of 2013, reported $126 million in revenue, compared to the company's total revenue of $135.1 million. This drug accounts to 93% of the total revenue. Its key areas of focus are neurology, nephrology, and rheumatology. The company makes research initiatives on a variety of medical conditions that are not completely controlled or cured with existing drugs on the market.

Acthar will bring additional upside on the revenue

Questcor's Acthar has received FDA approval for 19 separate indications in the U.S., only four of which are currently marketed. These four indications are Infantile Spasms, or IS, Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, Nephrotic Syndrome, or NS, and Rheumatology. The total sales for Acthar was $126 million in the first quarter of 2013, which decreased by 21% from the previous quarter. This decrease was due to change in the distribution channel and the introduction of a new reimbursement support center. The 9% quarter-over-quarter decline in new paid prescriptions to 1,750 in the first quarter of 2013 also contributed to Acthar's revenue decrease.

RLS hasn't been a high-priority target for the pharma industry given the lackluster sales of Requip and Horizant, a third competitor ofUCB's Neupro, and a number of generic alternatives. Impax Laboratories (NASDAQ: IPXL  ) was one of the few developing a new therapy, called IPX159, but Impax put the kibosh on the drug after it failed to meet its primary endpoint in a phase 2b study. According to its latest quarterly report, Impax has no other RLS drugs in development and seems to be focusing on getting its rejected Parkinson's disease drug Rytary back to the FDA for a second chance at approval.

Communications Systems is engaged in the manufacture and sale of modular connecting and wiring devices for voice and data communications, digital subscriber line filters, and structured wiring systems, and through its Transition Networks business unit in the manufacture of media and rate conversion products for telecommunications networks.
Few months ago the firm announceda series of actions to increase revenues and improve profitability. The first change was to operate as a holding company, monitoring and supporting all the business units: Suttle, Transition Networks (TN) unit and JDL Technologies. With this ew format each unit will operate with a high degree of autonomy. This will result in the reduction of labor costs, the emphasizing of accountability in the units as well as better recognition of performance. "While difficult decisions for the Board, we believe the changes we have taken to restructure our parent company as a holding company and to focus on individual business unit performance is in the best interest of our shareholders and will increase shareholder value" said Curtis A.
